Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the multidisciplinary team (clinical and non-clinical) who care for patients from rural and underserved communities. 

Program Overview

Stigma can shape the healthcare experiences of people living with HIV long before they meet a clinician, appearing through interactions with front-desk staff, assumptions about gender identity, and non-inclusive language in forms and patient materials. This activity, which is part of the three-part series titled Walking in Your Shoes: Taking Steps to Reduce HIV-Related Stigma in Rural and Underserved Communities of the Southeast, explores these challenges through the personal perspective of Roxy, a transgender woman with HIV attending her first appointment at a new clinic. Through two contrasting waiting room encounters—one that reinforces stigma and one that promotes inclusion and respect—learners gain insight into how these experiences can influence trust, engagement, and retention in care. Expert faculty will examine both scenarios, highlighting stigmatizing behaviors to avoid and practical strategies for creating a more affirming patient experience.
