Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians, registered nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses who care for patients from rural and underserved areas. 

Program Overview

Asthma is a significant public health problem with a high disease burden across patients of all ages. Improving asthma care in rural and underserved settings is particularly important given that individuals living in these areas have difficulty accessing specialist services due to geographic disparities and clinician shortages. Thus, it is vital that primary care clinicians who serve these populations be familiar with the latest updates and guideline recommendations. In this CME/CE activity, expert faculty will review best practices for asthma assessment and classification as well as available treatment options for children and adults with moderate-to-severe disease, including biologic therapies. Strategies to overcome disparities in care for these communities, such as telemedicine and self-management education, will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:  

• Apply current guideline recommendations for assessment and management, including a stepwise approach to treatment and measures for classifying severity
• Evaluate the latest clinical evidence on biologic therapies for children and adults with moderate-to-severe asthma
• Identify patients with moderate-to-severe asthma who are appropriate candidates for biologic therapies based on clinical guidelines and characteristics
• Use a patient-centered approach to educate patients on self-management and address their barriers to care
