Target Audience
This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians, registered nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses who care for patients from rural and underserved areas.
Program Overview
Over 1 million people in the United States are currently living with HIV. While overall rates of HIV are decreasing, incidence remains high in rural and underserved communities, particularly those in the Southeast region of the country. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is one effective strategy to prevent transmission, but it remains widely underutilized. Thus, more progress in prevention and treatment efforts is needed. In this activity, expert faculty will review best practices for initiating routine conversations with patients about HIV, PrEP, and sexual health. Evidence-based recommendations for prescribing, initiating, and monitoring patients on PrEP will also be discussed along with strategies to improve uptake and adherence.
This enduring activity is a recorded session from Rural Health Clinical Congress Spring 2024 that took place on May 18, 2024.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Utilize communication strategies that create open dialogue about HIV, PrEP, and sexual health
- Apply evidence-based recommendations and best practices for PrEP initiation, management, and monitoring
- Employ novel approaches and evidence-based interventions to improve uptake and adherence to PrEP
