Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare team who care for patients from rural and underserved communities.  

Program Overview

The need to strengthen HIV prevention continues across rural and underserved communities, especially throughout the Southeast United States. In Part 2 of this two-part series, HIV Prevention: Closing Gaps in PrEP Access in Rural and Underserved Communities of the Southeast US, expert faculty will utilize patient cases to illustrate practical approaches to incorporating pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) into HIV prevention. Through a range of clinical scenarios, the program will explore how to recognize appropriate PrEP candidates and tailor prevention strategies based on adherence considerations, comorbidities, and drug interactions. Cases will also address challenges that can affect PrEP use in rural and underserved settings, including limited healthcare access and barriers to continued use. By integrating clinical evidence with real-world decision-making, participants will develop practical skills to optimize PrEP and help broaden its use among diverse populations. 

This activity is a recording from a two-part webinar series that took place in June 2026.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to: 

• Use patient-centered communication strategies to assess HIV risk and counsel appropriate patients about PrEP as an effective HIV prevention option 
• Incorporate current guideline recommendations for initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing PrEP in patients at risk for HIV acquisition 
• Identify key structural and social barriers that affect PrEP uptake, adherence, and persistence among patients in rural and underserved communities 
• Implement practical, patient-centered strategies within primary care settings to improve access to PrEP and support long-term engagement in HIV prevention
