Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians, registered nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses who care for patients from rural and underserved areas.

Program Overview

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) disproportionately impacts rural communities, with a prevalence almost double that of urban areas and an upward trend in mortality. The condition often goes underrecognized, misdiagnosed, and undertreated, adding to its high clinical burden. Additionally, barriers such as lack of access to transportation, specialty care, and treatment options such as pulmonary rehabilitation further contribute to disparities in this population. In this activity, expert faculty will review best practices for assessing, identifying, and monitoring symptoms and future risk of exacerbations in patients with COPD. Strategies for selecting novel treatment options based on current guideline recommendations and ways to improve care and self-management in rural and underserved settings will also be discussed.

This enduring activity is a recorded session from Rural Health Clinical Congress Spring 2024 that took place on May 18, 2024.
