Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare team who serve patients from rural and underserved communities.

Program Overview

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in preventing HIV and is an essential tool for decreasing HIV transmission, especially among rural and underserved populations in the Southeast where healthcare disparities are more pronounced. This activity, which is Part 1 of a two-part series titled Expanding the Reach of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis to End the HIV Epidemic, is designed to provide clinicians with foundational information about PrEP as well as practical strategies for implementing HIV prevention programs, including the use of PrEP, in rural and underserved settings. Expert faculty will address current evidence on PrEP efficacy, guidelines for patient eligibility, and strategies to overcome barriers such as stigma, cultural challenges, and care access. It will also provide best practices for taking a sexual history and interdisciplinary approaches for engaging patients in HIV prevention.

This activity is a recording from a two-part webinar series that took place in August 2024.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Identify individuals who may be eligible for PrEP through routine sexual history-taking and conversations about sexual health
  • Evaluate the efficacy, safety, and dosing profiles of current and emerging PrEP regimens
  • Describe strategies to facilitate access to PrEP among rural and underserved populations
