Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare team who care for patients from rural and underserved communities.

Program Overview

Asthma is a common, chronic respiratory disease affecting nearly 25 million people in the United States, including over 4.6 million children. Primary care clinicians are often the first point of contact for patients with asthma, particularly in rural and underserved areas where access to specialists is limited. These settings face additional challenges such as long travel distances to healthcare facilities and limited training on how to care for individuals with asthma. In this on-demand CME/CE activity, experts in the field will review evidence-based strategies for effective treatment and collaborative management of asthma in the primary care setting. The program will highlight strategies for assessing disease control and severity, available treatment options, and guidance for ongoing follow-up care and referrals. Participants from a recent Asthma Project ECHO® initiative will also share their unique insights on challenges and lessons learned while caring for individuals with asthma in rural and underserved communities.

The content for this enduring activity was recorded on May 4, 2026.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Incorporate validated assessment instruments to determine asthma severity and monitor symptom control
  • Implement a guideline-driven, stepwise strategy for managing asthma tailored to individual patient needs
  • Select biologic therapies for moderate-to-severe asthma based on clinical presentation, comorbid conditions, biomarkers, and underlying endotype
  • Apply patient-centered strategies to overcome barriers and improve access to asthma care in rural and underserved communities
