Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians, registered nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses who care for patients from rural and underserved areas.

Program Overview

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a complex, chronic disorder characterized by recurrent abdominal pain and disordered bowel habits. More than one-third of patients with the condition have constipation-predominant IBS (IBS-C), which can significantly impact quality of life. Many patients with this subtype remain undiagnosed and/or receive suboptimal treatment, and those residing in rural and underserved communities often face additional barriers that can limit care. In this activity, expert faculty will review the symptoms and clinical presentations of IBS-C, available treatment options, and the latest clinical guideline recommendations. Strategies to improve access to care and collaborative management in rural and underserved settings will also be discussed.

This enduring activity is a recorded session from Rural Health Clinical Congress Spring 2024 that took place on May 18, 2024.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Identify the symptoms and clinical presentation of IBS-C to improve its early diagnosis and recognize patients who require further workup
  • Assess the efficacy, safety, and indications of the available pharmacological treatment options for patients with IBS-C
  • Apply guideline-recommended, patient-centered strategies for the individualized management of patients with IBS-C
  • Utilize strategies to overcome existing barriers and improve care access and the collaborative management of patients with IBS-C who reside in rural and underserved communities
