Statement of Need

The National Association of State Controlled Substances Authorities (NASCSA) supports, equips, and advocates for state controlled substance authorities, prescription monitoring program administrators, and other members in their work to advance the public’s health, safety, and welfare. Every state, and some districts and territories, have a prescription monitoring program (PMP), also known as a prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP), that requires pharmacies to report prescription data. This course is intended to help pharmacists and pharmacy technicians understand the critical role they play in ensuring the quality and integrity of PMP data that is used to improve patient safety across the nation.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:

• Analyze the importance and value of complete, accurate data reported by dispensers to PMPs
• Assess the impact of intentional or non-intentional data entry errors and data omissions on patient safety
• Discuss the downstream impacts of pharmacy-reported PMP data on clinical decision-making processes
•  Identify and implement changes that can be made in your practice setting to improve PMP data integrity
