Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians, registered nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses who care for patients from rural and underserved areas.

Program Overview

Food allergy affects more than 7% of children and 10% of adults in the United States. With a growing prevalence, it has become an increasing public health concern, as it can cause substantial morbidity, including severe reactions such as anaphylaxis, as well as reduced quality of life. Primary care clinicians play an important role in the management of food allergy, especially in rural and underserved communities where patients face unique barriers to care that can contribute to greater disease burden. In this case-based activity, expert faculty will review new and emerging therapies for food allergy prevention and treatment and how to best integrate them into clinical practice. Strategies to improve access to care and address barriers faced by patients with food allergies in rural and underserved areas will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:  

• Assess the burden and impact of food allergies on the quality of life of patients
• Compare the benefits and limitations of current and new/emerging therapies for the treatment of food allergies
• Assess the safety and efficacy of novel biologic therapies for the prevention and management of food allergies
• Utilize strategies to improve care access and overcome existing barriers for the management of patients with food allergies residing in rural and underserved communities
