Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare team who serve patients from rural and underserved communities.

Program Overview

Implementing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV can be challenging in rural and underserved communities due to stigma, clinician uncertainty about its use, and long travel distances to the nearest clinics. However, primary care clinicians can play a critical role in stopping the spread of HIV by promoting PrEP when appropriate and taking steps to identify and reengage patients in care. This activity, which is Part 2 of a two-part series titled Expanding the Reach of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis to End the HIV Epidemic, will lead participants through a series of realistic patient case scenarios to review the latest guidance on PrEP and important considerations for ongoing management and patient counseling. Experts will also discuss ways to increase uptake, adherence, and persistence with PrEP in rural and underserved populations.

This activity is a recording from a two-part webinar series that took place in August 2024.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to: 

• Implement best practices to assess risk for HIV acquisition and counsel patients about PrEP use and adherence
• Apply the latest evidence and guidance on initiating PrEP and retaining and reengaging patients in care into clinical practice
• Integrate strategies to improve uptake, adherence, and persistence with PrEP in rural and underserved communities
