Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for oncologists, advanced practice providers, and other members of the healthcare team who serve patients from rural and underserved communities.

Program Overview

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer represents about 10% to 20% of all breast cancers in the United States. While this cancer subtype is typically linked to aggressive disease with poor prognosis, recent advances in targeted therapy have improved overall survival in this patient population. However, management remains challenging in rural and underserved areas which face unique barriers to care such as long travel distances and clinician shortages. In this activity, expert faculty will review current and emerging therapies for HER2-expressing metastatic breast cancer and the use of HER2 testing to guide treatment selection. Interprofessional strategies to overcome disparities in breast cancer care in rural and underserved communities will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:  

• Describe how to interpret HER2 testing results to guide treatment selection for patients with HER2-expressing breast cancer
• Assess ongoing clinical research evaluating novel agents and treatment strategies for HER2-expressing metastatic breast cancer 
• Incorporate interprofessional strategies and shared decision-making to reduce breast cancer care disparities in rural and underserved communities
