Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare team who care for patients from rural and underserved communities.

Program Overview

Many clinicians feel discomfort or uncertainty when initiating conversations about sexual health, sexual history, and prevention tools such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). However, these discussions are essential to reducing HIV transmission and ensuring whole-person care. This on-demand CME/CE activity—which is Part 1 of a three-part series titled Navigating Patient Conversations: Strategies to Ensure Equitable Access to HIV Prevention and PrEP in Rural and Underserved Communities—demonstrates an encounter between a nonbinary patient and their provider to model practical strategies for creating a safe, affirming space for patients of all identities. Clinicians will gain insight into how to ask inclusive, nonjudgmental questions; normalize discussions around sexual behavior; and recommend prevention options like PrEP. Expert faculty will also highlight key takeaways and communication techniques that can be readily applied in practice to improve patient trust, satisfaction, and health outcomes.

The content for this enduring activity was recorded on May 5, 2025.
