Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare team who care for patients from rural and underserved communities.

Program Overview

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are immunologically mediated, debilitating disorders characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Due to specialist shortages in rural and underserved communities, individuals with IBD are often managed by primary care providers, highlighting the need for increased expertise in the detection and management of these conditions. This on-demand CME/CE activity reviews evidence-based strategies for early identification, effective treatment, and collaborative management of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis in the primary care setting. Throughout the program, expert faculty discuss current and emerging therapies, guidance for ongoing monitoring and referral, and considerations for special populations, including pregnant women and the elderly. Participants from a recent IBD Project ECHO® initiative also share unique insights into the challenges and lessons learned while caring for individuals with IBD in rural and underserved communities.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:  

• Apply evidence-based tools and strategies to assess and diagnose patients with suspected IBD
• Summarize current and emerging treatment options for IBD, including potential side effects and recommended follow-up care
• Employ evidence-based treatment strategies to personalize management of patients with IBD in accordance with the latest clinical evidence and guideline recommendations 
• Employ multidisciplinary strategies to improve access to care and treatment for rural and underserved populations with IBD
