Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare team who serve patients in rural and underserved communities.

Program Overview

Despite its proven benefits over the last decade, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) remains widely underutilized in rural and underserved communities that face high rates of new HIV diagnoses. Various barriers to PrEP uptake persist in these areas including stigma, lack of knowledge, and inadequate skills to prescribe or recommend HIV prevention strategies. This activity, which is Part 1 of a two-part series titled PrEP Uptake and Delivery: Strategies for Reducing Barriers in Rural and Underserved Communities, will cover best practices for discussing sexual history and the need for PrEP with patients in an open, nonjudgmental manner. Evidence-based guidance for initiating and maintaining appropriate candidates on PrEP will also be discussed.

This activity is a recording from a two-part webinar series that took place in August 2023. Please note that any data, information, and guidance presented in the activity are subject to change.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Utilize best practices to facilitate open conversation about sexual history and health
  • Describe the recommended regimens for PrEP, including dosing, safety, efficacy, and clinical eligibility
  • Incorporate strategies to facilitate access to PrEP among rural and underserved populations
