Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians, registered nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses who care for patients from rural and underserved areas.

Program Overview

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a relapsing remitting disease that requires lifelong management. Early treatment with effective medications can prevent disease progression and complications, but diagnostic and treatment delays are common. In rural and underserved communities, patients also have limited access to multidisciplinary and specialist-led care. As a result, primary care clinicians play a critical role in not only the diagnosis and disease-specific management of IBD, but also in preventive care. In this activity, expert faculty will review best practice strategies for establishing a diagnosis of IBD and providing appropriate treatment based on the latest clinical evidence and guideline recommendations. Strategies to improve care and ongoing management for rural and underserved populations with IBD will also be discussed.

• Describe the initial diagnostic workup for patients with suspected IBD
