Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare team who care for patients from rural and underserved communities. 

Program Overview

Integrating patients into decisions about HIV care, including treatment selection, is key to improving long-term adherence and outcomes. It is equally important to address barriers that may lead to missed clinic visits or reduced adherence—challenges that are heightened in rural and underserved communities, where patients may face disparities such as long travel distances to care and lack of anonymity in tight-knit towns. This activity, part of a three-part series titled Optimizing HIV Care Conversations in Rural and Underserved Communities: A Whole-Person Approach to Treatment, utilizes a mock clinic encounter to demonstrate best practices for engaging patients in shared decision-making when discussing HIV treatment. The video will include strategies for addressing barriers to adherence, challenges with clinic visits, and stigma. Expert faculty will also highlight supportive resources that may be helpful and important considerations for living with HIV as patients get older.

After completing this activity, select participants will have the exciting opportunity to reinforce what they learned and further strengthen their HIV care communication skills by interacting with an AI-generated synthetic patient (access details and instructions to be provided via email).
